Edward J. Fotsch, MD – Founder and Chief Executive Officer

Edward Fotsch, MD is the CEO of Gemini Health LLC, a CA-based health IT firm delivering rules-based information to U.S. physicians and patients via Electronic Health Records (EHR), web and mobile health applications. Gemini’s focus is on clinical and cost information for physicians from payers and PBMs.

Prior to founding Gemini Health Dr. Fotsch was CEO and Executive Chairman of PDR Network LLC which provides drug information and services to all U.S. physicians and other U.S. prescribers via EHRs, print and electronic formats, including the iconic Physicians Desk Reference. Dr. Fotsch led the integration of PDR drug information into dozens of EHRs used by hundreds of thousands of U.S. physicians. Prior to his tenure at PDR Dr. Fotsch was the CEO of Medem Inc.; a CA-based Health IT firm that created the iHealthRecord- a patient-physician electronic communication system (Patient Portal) integrated into personal health records (“PHR”) and EHRs. The iHealth service became part of Intuit Health. Prior to Medem Dr. Fotsch was the founder and CEO of Metis, a CA-based health IT firm which was sold to Healtheon prior to their IPO and merger with WebMD. Dr. Fotsch has over ten years experience in the clinical practice of medicine while for the past twenty years he has lead organizations that provide Internet-based healthcare applications, networks and communications services.

For two decades Dr. Fotsch has been a nationally recognized expert in healthcare and the application of information technology to the healthcare industry. He authored Planning and Implementing Your Healthcare Internet Strategy, published by Atlantic Information Services, copyright 1996, and has also been published repeatedly in the area of online healthcare communication and professional liability, including the eHealth liability chapter in Medical Malpractice, A Physician’s Sourcebook, 2005 Humana Press Inc. He also authored the Personal Health Record chapter of Newt Gingrich’ book, Paper Kills, 2006 CHT Press and his articles on healthcare and information technology have been published repeatedly in healthcare trade journals.

Dr. Fotsch is a member of several national Health Information Technology committees and panels including several Health IT FDA/Brookings working groups providing expert opinion and analysis to CDER, CDRH, ONC and other government agencies. He authored the now-approved U.S. billing (CPT) code for online patient care (eVisits). Dr. Fotsch was the first recipient of the liability carrier annual National Patient Safety Award in 2005 for his work with EHRs and PHRs, is a frequent conference speaker in healthcare IT and is regularly quoted as an expert in healthcare Internet, EHR and information technology issues by the national press including the NY Times, Chicago Tribune, AP, Reuters and the Wall Street Journal.

Dr. Fotsch is 58 years old and lives in Sausalito CA. He is married and has four children; two sets of twins.
